I was on a road trip to my grandparents house on the weekend. This weekend didn’t hold any special event or holiday. Though, my grandparents asked me if I wanted to come spend time with them. I don’t usually get the chance to talk to my grandparents. Not only that, but I didn’t do much on the weekends. I thought that this wouldn’t be a bad idea to get me out of the house. I grabbed my laptop and anything extra I might need for the trip. Before getting into the car and beginning my road trip to my grandparents place.
My grandparents lived two hours away. So, I had to make sure I had anything I might need to keep me going. While I was driving on the freeway towards my grandparents place. I turned on some music and listened to whatever tunes came on. The freeway was silent and vacant. So, it was a fairly calming and relaxing trip. After what felt like an hour, I heard an alert from my gas signaling it’s depletion. I looked at my gas meter, it told me that it was nearly empty. Which meant that I was going to have to take a stop at a gas station nearby.
However, that’s when I realized that there wasn’t any town to be seen for miles. Not only was the freeway vacant of life, but also the environment I found myself in. I continued to drive for a few more minutes. Until, I passed a sign that informed me of an exit coming up. I kept the tunes on to keep me relaxed. It wasn’t long until a small town appeared off to my right. The town appeared to have some form of life, as I noticed lights from within houses. Not only that, but I saw a gas station close by the exit of the freeway.
When I drove into the main street of the small town. I came to realize that even the town lacked life inside. As I drove into the gas station and parked beside a pump. I saw no cars driving down the street, or even people walking. That’s when I looked toward the gas station building. The lights were on, and I saw the cashier behind the register. They didn’t move a muscle, but I could tell they were looking at me. When our eyes met, the man within the building looked back down in front of him.
I started to feel nervous, but I let it go as I knew that I had to go inside. I closed the door behind me, and started to head up to the gas station doors. When I opened the door, I felt the familiar breeze of cool air touch my skin. I glanced over to the cashier, who was now reading off a newspaper. I felt anxious, but I continued to cautiously and nervously walk up to the cashier. I took out my wallet as I approached the man. After a minute of silence, I finally spoke. “Hello.”
As soon as I said this, the cashier placed the newspaper down and looked at me. The man was older, a long and bushy beard colored white. He had wrinkles all over his skin, and wore glasses with what appeared to be thick lenses. It took a second for the man to adjust his glasses and recognize me. Supposedly suggesting that the man was almost fully blind. I slightly smiled at the man, before speaking again on the purpose for being there. “I’d like to purchase $30 for 5.” The cashier glanced outside the window toward my car. Before sitting upright and taking my cash.
He placed the money into the cash register, before looking up to me. “Will that be all?” He spoke in a very old and smokey voice. I shook my head, before walking out the door and toward my car. When I got back to the car, the pump was activated and ready for me to use. I took the gas pump and started to fuel my car up. This meant that I was standing outside in the quiet environment outside. As I did, I started to observe the environment around me.
That’s when I saw two people, dressed in casual clothing. They were standing by a streetlight on the opposite side of the street from the gas station. Instead of hearing or seeing them move, they stood along the sidewalk. What made my skin crawl, was that both of them were staring straight at me. My spine started to tingle, making me extremely nervous. I tried to ignore them by turning back around to look at my pump.
However, as I looked back toward the gas station store. I noticed the same cashier clerk, but this time. He was standing on the other side of the door, staring straight at me with a blank expression. I started to feel unsafe standing out in the open. I finished pumping the gas and got myself ready to leave. I opened the car door and sat down on the driver seat. I didn’t take a second to wait, I instantly put my keys into the ignition and turned. As soon as the car started up, I looked at my gas meter. Luckily, the gas was halfway full.
I felt like that was enough and that I didn’t need anymore. Right when I looked out my windshield, about to start pulling out. I saw that the same cashier was standing right in front of my car. I peeked through my rearview mirror, and noticed that the same two people from across the street. Were now standing right behind my car. Trying to keep me from backing up without hitting either of them. If I did, I would probably go to jail. I sat in my driver seat, feeling very anxious to move at this point.
I looked back up toward the same cashier. He continued to stand almost completely motionless, beside him barely swaying side to side. I was panicking, but I didn’t know what was the right move. That’s when a knock was heard on my driver side window. I almost screamed and turned my head toward the driver side window. Where I saw a woman, dressed in messy clothing standing beside it. I was shocked and scared, staring at this woman. Once again, she knocked on the window. As though she wanted me to roll down my window for her to speak to me.
At this point, I had no idea what else to do. I was just about to roll down my window. When I glanced over to my rearview mirror and realized that the two had moved from behind the car. I instantly started to reverse my car at full throttle out of the gas station parking lot. Right as I got onto the street, I glanced over to the three freaks. I noticed that neither were following me. Though, they continued to give me creepy blank stares as I drove off.
As soon as I got back onto the freeway. I never felt more safe than driving on a vacant freeway. I was able to arrive at my grandparents in less than an hour. I made no more stops along the trip since the previous one. I told my grandparents about the town, but neither of them heard or knew what I was talking about. I don't know if what I saw was a hallucination. However, I promised myself that next time I go out on a trip. That I would take someone else with me. Hopefully next time, I won’t be seen as the crazy one.
