Halloween used to be one of my most favorite holiday’s. I would always go out alone with a different costume each year. Always attempting to be the most scary from the previous year in hopes of getting extra candy. Sometimes it works, and most of the time the people didn’t care about the holiday. Despite this though, I always kept trying each year.
I didn’t have many friends, so I mostly went trick or treating by myself. The idea of making the people handing out candy to give you more than intended for the scariest costume. Was one of the reasons why I still went out. However, since then I’ve grown up. Though, I never grew out of the tradition of the holiday’s. I always dress up in various kinds of costumes each year. Not only that, but I also might be overdoing it with the decorations.
With not only the decorations, I would always make sure to give people a scare when grabbing candy from me. It mostly worked on the children, teenagers and adults were somewhat impressed, or not phased. This year, it was no different from any previous years. The neighborhood I lived in gave me a nickname due to my passion in halloween. They usually would call me the, “Halloween Monster.” I kind of grew accepting in it, and attempted to use my nickname to convince various others to come over the holidays.
Anyways, enough about me. I do have something insane to share. There’s this thing that has been going around each year of halloween. Even my parents foretold this rumor. The rumor went like this, “You should always blow out your pumpkins before 11PM.” It was a weird kind of rumor that I never really put much thought into. I thought it was a way of saying that, that’s when Halloween mostly ends. However, I realized over the years that by the time Halloween ends. The time is nowhere near the rumor’s suggested time.
A lot of times, Halloween ends around 9PM at the latest in our neighborhood. That was the latest kind of trick or treat. You could expect that none would ever arrive at your door past 10PM. So, when this rumor was heard throughout the neighborhood. As well as knowing when Halloween really ends. I didn’t really think much of it. Until one Halloween, I broke the rumor’s rule. All I can say is that I should’ve listened to my parents more carefully. Nowadays, I would be sure to always blow out my pumpkin candles before 11PM.
You might believe I’m just making things up to scare you. However, that’s further from the truth. On this halloween night, nothing odd happened throughout trick or treating. Various kinds of costumes, worn by multiple age groups. Sometimes, even parents would go up to a house with their kids. Also dressed up in halloween clothing as well to celebrate the tradition. Slowly but surely, over the course of the night. The rings of the doorbell started to slowly stop coming in. The candy bowl was luckily half full, meaning I could have the rest. I checked out through my window to see the darkness fully taking over the neighborhood.
I decided to sit down on the couch and watch a scary movie to pass the time. The movie only caused me to lose track of time. By the time the movie was over, I checked my phone. Instantly realizing that it was twenty minutes past 11PM. A few thoughts rushed into my head, one of them telling me to hurry and blow out the pumpkins candle. While another thought that my parents were a bunch of hogwash. It took me only a full minute, before I got up from the couch and opened the door. I turned off all of the decorations and took two of the pumpkins outside. I blew them out, and placed them back onto the ground.
Instead of going inside, I looked around for any sign to be worried. When I saw nothing out of the ordinary, I shrugged and headed back inside. For the longest time, I really believed that something was going to happen. Though, nothing actually happened for what felt like half an hour. When I rechecked the time, I decided to start getting ready for bed. I turned out some of the lights and headed into my bedroom. I took a nice cold shower and got myself just about ready to head to sleep.
Though, right as I was about to get under the covers. A knock was heard from the front door. At first, I was confused. There shouldn’t be any new trick or treaters this late at night. I waited for a few minutes, before sitting down on my bed. I ignored the knock, believing it was something else. Though, before I could lay down in my bed. I heard the doorbell ring from the front door. Once again, I was confused when I heard this. Though, I decided to get up from the bed and start heading to the front door.
When I walked up to the front door, I looked through the window on the side. I saw nobody outside, making me believe that someone was pulling a prank on me. Right as I pulled my head away from the window and started heading back to the bedroom. The doorbell rang again, this time it startled me. I turned around and looked toward the door and window. I peeped through the window and saw nobody or any signs of anyone running away from the front door. Despite the darkness, I was able to somewhat see outside.
I turned on the light outside and checked through the peephole of the door. At this point, I was confused and slightly terrified. Is someone pranking me? If so, how are they so fast? I pulled away from the door and took a few steps back. I stared at the door in confusion, but it only rang. This makes me shake in terror as soon as it happened. At first, I wanted to believe the doorbell was broken. Though, I glanced through my window. There, I saw a shadow coming from the light. As though somebody was standing at my front door. The shadow was tall and extremely thin, appearing to be holding something in its hands toward the door.
I didn’t know what to make of this. I decided to check through the peephole one more time, hoping to see the figure on the other side. However, I saw nothing of the sort. I was just about to call the police. When I heard a voice come from the other side of the door. It was the voice of a complete nightmare, a deep and dark voice sounding like a demonic creature was speaking. It was also slightly muffled from the door separating me and it. “Trick or treat!” I shivered from the voice speaking, unsure what I should make of it.
I looked down at my phone, beginning to dial 911 into it. That’s when the doorknob started to twist and turn. Almost like whoever was on the other side was trying to get in. I rushed toward my bedroom and closed the door behind me. I turned out the lights and hid beside my bed. I told the operator on the other end that somebody was trying to get into my house. After I told them where I lived, they informed me that a police cruiser was sent to my location.
The operator told me to stay calm and stay on the phone until the police arrive. That’s when I heard the door burst open. I told the operator that they burst through the front door. The operator once again attempted to keep me calm and quiet. I could hear the sounds of footsteps slowly approaching my bedroom door. I begin to shiver in fright as I look up over my bed. I watched as the door began to twist and turn. The operator informed me to hide under my bed, which I obliged. I kept my hand over my mouth, trying to force myself to stay quiet.
It wasn’t long until the doorknob stopped twisting and silence left the room. That’s when I started to hear the sounds of police sirens outside. I told the operator that the person was gone. As well as I could hear police outside. After a few minutes, footsteps approached the bedroom door and the voice of an officer was heard on the other side. I got out from under the bed and hung up with the operator. I opened the bedroom door and saw two police officers in the hallway. I hugged one of the officers with tears in my eyes.
Several minutes later, I gave the police the best information I could about what just happened. They told me that the door was slammed open by some kind of intruder, but that was all they could find. They told me they’ll stay outside in case the intruder returns. I closed and locked the door after the police searched throughout the house with me. Obviously, we found no sign of the intruder anywhere. It took me an extra two hours before I was able to pass out in my bed. I had no idea who it was outside that attempted to attack me. Though, I knew this couldn’t be a coincidence with the rumor.
Whether this creature was part of my imagination is up to debate. The shadow from the light outside did give me the belief. That whatever was out there, was not human in any way shape or form. I’m sure as hell not going to make the same mistake again next year.
