The Detective

Another day in Los Angeles, California for the FBI headquarters. An agent, by the name of Reggie Goodman was sitting at his desk going through papers. Papers of various kinds of reports and investigations brought down by law enforcement. Reggie sat back in his chair and sighed. He stretched his arms out, feeling exhausted from the constant hours at the office.

Eventually, his boss enters the room and folds his arms. He laid against the doorway of Reggie’s office entrance and looked at him. “You seem exhausted.” Reggie nodded in approval, but didn’t say anything back. “Are you going out to break?”

Reggie took a long look at him, before nodding again. “What if I am?”

His boss smirked at the question. “Listen, I’m going to need you to do something for me after your break. It’s quite important.”

Reggie stood up from his desk, taking a cigar out from a packet of cigarettes. “Of course you do.” Reggie mumbled to himself as he started to head out the door. Right as Reggie walked past his boss, starting to head out of the building. “You could’ve told me that anytime before now.” His boss stopped him right in front of him. His boss slowly looked up toward Reggie with a face of seriousness.

“Listen, this one is very serious. I need you to help me with it, okay?” Reggie held the cigar between his fingers, looking at his boss in the eyes. Giving his boss full attention, his boss started to speak. “There’s this case that has been getting a lot of questions lately. I can’t pinpoint what’s happening, but I need someone to look into it.”

While Reggie was still listening to him, his boss handed him a folder. Reggie held it up and looked at the label on it. The folder read, “Unidentifiable_Case_File_1042.” Reggie looked up to him in confusion. “This isn’t normally how we do this here.” Reggie tried to reassure him, still confused.

His boss turned around to look at the rest of the office. Then, he pushed Reggie further into the office before closing the door behind him. He closed the blinds of the office before turning to Reggie. He started to whisper toward him, like he was trying to keep this a secret. “Reggie, I want you to do this file because it might attract your interest. I know that you love UFO’s and supernatural stuff. So, instead of giving this to the special fed’s meant for this kind of case. I want you to do it for me.”

“Won’t you get in trouble?”

“Just as long as you keep this between you and me, there won’t be any problems.” When his boss said this, Reggie took another long look down at the folder in his hands. Then, he placed the folder onto his desk.

“I’m going to go on break first.” Reggie told him, which his boss was fully accepted toward. Reggie opened the door and started to walk out. His boss remained where he was, staring at the folder on Reggie’s desk. Then, he finally started to head back toward his office. Reggie placed the cigar in between his lips and took out his lighter. Upon walking out of the building, he lit the cigar and started to take his smoke break.

When Reggie was finished, he started to head back to his office. Almost completely forgetting the conversation between his boss and him. He sat down at his desk, but realized the folder on his desk. He glanced down at it for a second, before pushing away the stack of papers to the side. Allowing him to start typing away at his computer.

However, Reggie would constantly glance down at the folder beside him. He fought the urge to check through it, believing it was just another workload. Though, eventually he noticed himself staring down at it for what felt like the longest time. He decided to pull himself together and pick up the folder and open it.

As soon as he pulled out the paper within it. The paper felt very odd to what he usually deals with. It felt a lot thicker than he thought it was. He started to pull through the pages. When he did, the first thing he saw caught his attention. The file started to list several kinds of suspects. Though, these weren’t any regular kinds of subjects. These were subjects listed with supernatural phenomena.

Reggie looked up from the folder, toward his office door. When he realized he was completely alone, he began reading through the text. The first one had a subject name of, “Lucious.” He read the description of him for a bit, before turning to the next page. This page had a subject name of, “King Mades.” This person caught Reggie’s attention when he read the supernatural capabilities, supposedly having a way to create panic when looked at.

This reminded Reggie of the myth called Slenderman. Only this time, people actually went insane from just simply looking at him. The file had no image of the suspect, which Reggie felt relieved of. It’s when Reggie turns to the next page, that he starts to question what he was reading at this point. He felt as though he was being pranked by his own boss.

The next file had a suspect name of Forgener. Reggie read through the supernatural capabilities, but it only said N/A. Reggie closed the entire file and started to make his way to his boss’s office. Feeling betrayed by his own boss, he wanted to speak to him about what he was even reading.

He knocked on his boss’s door, which was answered quickly on the other side. Reggie opened the door and walked in. After closing the door behind him, Reggie placed the entire file onto the desk. “Is this some sort of joke? What did I even read?”

Reggie’s boss leans back into his chair, looking up to him. “What do you mean? Do you not like it? That’s the only real supernatural thing that I can find.”

“I feel like you’re trying to prank me with a fake investigation. I doubt that any of these people exist.” When Reggie said these words, his boss grew slightly surprised.

“What? You don’t believe that somebody can fly through the sky with a sword? Or that aliens exist?”

Reggie grew speechless when he said those words. He remembered what happened a month ago, the events of the AzLean Soldier saving earth from annihilation. He grew relieved when he knew they were all safe. Though, for some reason. Reggie felt like the files were going too far. “That’s not what I’m talking about.”

“Then what? If aliens can exist, why can’t they?” His boss pointed down to the files on his desk.

“Because, a person can’t just grow up with or obtain powers. There’s no scientific evidence to point toward that being a thing.” Reggie looked out of his boss’s window for a second. Before his boss can reference the events of Floyd Lorence’s little battle in the sky. Reggie spoke up before him, “Don’t even get me started on that, please.”

His boss sighed and shrugged. “I don’t know what you want from me. You say that these things are real, but you deny one. Come on, Reggie.” When his boss shrugged again in confusion. Reggie sighed as he looked back down to the files on his boss’s desk.

“Unless you can give me significant proof that something like this exists. I’m not going to take the case.” Reggie folded his arms across his chest.

His boss nodded in approval, “Fine, but I will keep this on my desk until you change your mind.”

“Do whatever you want with it.” Reggie opened the door beside him. “Well, I’ll just go back to my paperwork I need to deal with.” Reggie headed back to his office, while his boss pushed the files onto the side. Keeping them on the desk just in case either him or Reggie comes back for them. Then, he returned back to what he was doing previously.

When the work day had ended, Reggie finished all of the owed paperwork he had to do. He turned them in according to his boss, before heading home. As soon as Reggie got home, he cooked up a quick meal. Then, he took a shower and brushed his teeth. Once he was done, he passed out in his bed. Completely exhausted from the long work day.

~ ~ ~

When the next day had arrived. Reggie woke up really early, approximately six hours before his shift started. He got up from bed, quickly dressed, then ate breakfast. For a few hours, he relaxed watching either movies or doing chores around his house. By the time that two hours until work was nearing. He dressed up properly for work, then left his house.

Since it was 1:00PM at this point. He decided to grab a quick lunch before heading to the building. He went to a local convenience store to grab a pack of cigarettes and lunch for work. Walking into the convenience store, he looked around the store for stuff to take with him. When he got what he needed, which was mostly chips, a soda, and a sandwich.

He walked up to the cashier, who was a young man in his early twenties. He placed the contents onto the counter and took out his wallet, while the man calculated the prices. Right as Reggie took out his wallet and took out his card. He realized that the TV was on in the corner. The channel featured the news, instantly catching Reggie’s attention.

Reggie noticed that the TV was talking about an incident happening nearby. Only, this wasn’t any normal incident. What really caught Reggie’s attention was the name that was mentioned in the news report title. “Forgener strike’s again downtown.” As soon as Reggie saw those words appear on screen. Reggie remembered back to the files he read yesterday. Within the files, was a subject named the exact same.

Reggie was taken out of his train of thought by the cashier. “Sir?” Reggie snapped back to reality and looked the cashier in the eyes.

“Oh, sorry. I was just thinking about something from work yesterday. What did you say?” Reggie told the cashier.

“Do you want anything else?” The cashier repeated again for Reggie to hear.

“Uh, a pack of cigars please. The redwood kind, thank you.” The cashier took the proper pack of cigars from behind him and placed them on the counter in front of him. Reggie paid for the food and placed them in a bag to take with him. Then, he walked out of the convenience store and toward his car. He quickly drove back to the FBI building.

When he arrived at the office, his boss noticed him coming in slightly earlier than expected. His boss walked out of his office, calling over to him. “Reggie? What are you doing here so early? Your shift doesn’t start for another hour.”

Reggie looked over to his boss, “Hey, do you still have those files on your desk from yesterday?”

“What? The supernatural files?” Reggie nods. “Yeah, like I said. I wasn’t going to get rid of them unless you change your mind.”

“Well, I changed my mind.” Reggie told him. “I’d like to get started on them right away.”

His boss brightened up a little from Reggie’s sudden encouragement. “Alright Reggie, if you say so.” His boss went back into his office while Reggie walked into his. He instantly sat down at his computer. He logged on quickly and began typing away on the search bar of his browser.

His boss entered his office with the files, placing them onto his desk. “There you go Reggie.” Reggie took the files and quickly flipped to the Forgener page. His boss remained on the other side of Reggie’s desk, staring down at him. “What made you change your mind so fast?”

Reggie thought for a second before answering. “Some rethinking.” Reggie’s boss nodded in approval, before heading back to his office to leave Reggie alone to focus. Reggie typed a few keywords into the browser, which all brought up good results. The first search was “Forgener.” At first, it didn’t bring up any eye-catching articles. Though, he clicked onto the news tab. This quickly brought up multiple articles about that phrase. Some of which talked about the news that Reggie saw back in the convenience store.

Others talked about a different case, that supposedly talked about the same person. Only this time, seemed to go back a few years. The titles read as follows, “Father and mother killed by a dangerous criminal calling himself Forgener.” A few others were written a bit differently, but were about the same case.

Reggie quickly started to review each article. He checked to see if there were any specific descriptions about the criminal. Though, his search came up with nothing. Each article explained that the murders happened hours before police got involved. Investigations proved to be meaningless, as whoever was doing these murderers. Was somehow capable of escaping quick enough to not get caught.

Reggie was starting to get very suspicious of the articles and the case. However, his interest in the investigation was getting stronger. Meaning, he wanted to get more information about it. He continued to search through more articles, but none proved to be useful. He quickly changed his source to YouTube. A video, talking about the mysterious murderer on the loose as a documentary.

Reggie listened and watched the video to its fullest. To Reggie’s surprise, the video contained information that no other article explained. Information that could be proven to be useful for his case. The documentary was taken a few years ago, when the first case was made. Which at first might sound to be outdated, but the video had good information that articles never touched on.

When Reggie finished through his search, he goal now was to connect the dots. Also known as, trying to find where this criminal was going next. Because Forgener was acting smart in these killings. He knew that he was going to have to get up from his desk. He examined and reviewed all of the evidence, before getting up from his seat. He stood up on both of his feet and looked around the room.

He was beginning to think to himself about who this Forgener was. So far, the people being killed by Forgener have been proven to be parents and a family. These two family groups on the surface appeared to be separate. However, when Reggie looked through both of their personal information. He found out that they both had a deep connection to each other.

This meant that of two things; 1, Forgener is related to these family members, or 2, they are a targeted family for some internal reason not yet known to the public. Of course, in order to find out what’s really going on. Reggie was going to have to go out and conduct his own research. This meant finding out who else is involved with the family. Reggie believed that anyone related to any other of these family members, were in danger.

~ ~ ~

Reggie drove his personal vehicle up to a house. Reggie was able to discover the rest of the family still alive, and where one of them lived. He got out of his vehicle, and began his way up to the front door. As soon as he knocked on the front door, almost an immediate response from inside was heard. A woman on the other side yelled out, “Who is it?”

“My name’s Reggie, I work at the FBI. I’d like to speak to you, please.” Reggie spoke loud enough for the woman on the other side to begin walking toward the door. Reggie heard as the woman unlocked the door, before instantly opening it just barely enough for her to peek through.

“FBI? Hopefully I haven’t done anything wrong.”

“No mam, but someone you might know is.” Reggie took out a photo of Forgener’s picture and held it up to her. “Do you know this man?” The woman looked at the photo for a second, before nodding her head.

“Yeah, that’s Carter Patt. He’s a family friend. Why? Did he do something?”

“We believe he’s after you and your family. I’d like you to come with us so we can ask some questions.” The woman didn’t reject, she seemed willingly able to comply to Reggie’s demands.

“Uh, okay. . .” She turned around and quickly headed inside. “Give me a second to grab my things.” Reggie nodded, before beginning to walk back to the car to wait for her. Knowing Forgener’s real name was a great start for the investigation. He hoped this woman would be able to help him.

As Reggie stood and waited, a loud crashing sound was heard from within the house. This immediately alerted Reggie, looking toward the front door. He started to slowly approach the front of the house. He reached back to his pistol, taking it out and holding it in front of him. “Mam?” Reggie called into the front of the house. Though, he didn’t get any response from her.

Reggie decides to start walking inside to investigate the noise. Slowly walking inside, he eventually walks into the living room. With the back sliding door completely shattered, glass littering all over the floor. With no sign of the woman anywhere. This alerts Reggie to call for backup. He remains standing in the middle of the room, while he grabs his phone and begins calling his boss.

The boss answered the call, “Reggie? What do you need?”

“Sir, I’m investigating the case. I believe Forgener had just kidnapped a woman I was trying to get answers from at her house.”

The boss on the other end grew panicked. “Oh dear, give me your location and I’ll send some units over.” As Reggie gives his boss his location, he hears some shuffling noises coming from upstairs. However, the sounds made Reggie cautious rather than comforted that the woman may still be nearby. Reggie pointed his pistol toward the stairs and cautiously made his way toward them.

That’s when the shuffling only intensified. Reggie starts to slowly head up the stairs, keeping his pistol ready and staying high alert for any movements. Suddenly, another loud crashing sound is heard from another window. Reggie believed that this was the suspect escaping. Knowing he was in the clear, he quickly started approaching toward the cause of the noise.

He found himself in a bedroom, with the remains of the woman laying on the bed. The window is shattered, like someone jumped through it to the outside. Reggie lowered his pistol at the sight of the scene. Moving toward the woman on the bed with complete shock. “Oh no. . .” Reggie sprinted over beside the woman and felt her pulse in panic. Though, he grew disappointed when he felt nothing. Reggie cursed under his breath as he turned to the window.

He leans over to the window, but notices no sign of anybody outside. Reggie looked back down at the woman, feeling regretful of what happened to her. He felt as though he did this to her. Reggie looked around the room for a few seconds, before making his way back out through the front door. That’s where he was met with three cruisers parked outside.

When the police officers saw Reggie standing outside of the doorway. They began walking up to him with their hands over the pistol on the belt. “We came to assist.” One of them claimed.

“We need an ambulance fast, the woman is deceased in her bed upstairs. I believe it’s the Forgener, his real name is Carter Patt.” Two of the officers started heading inside the house to see if Reggie was telling the truth. While two other officers kept talking to Reggie.
